Mayweather Apologizes for Racist Rant

Floyd Mayweather Jr. took to the Internet again on Friday, this time to apologize for a profanity-filled racist rant against Manny Pacquiao that he recorded on uStream.com Thursday.

Mayweather continued to mispronounce Pacquiao’s surname, repeatedly referring to him as “Pooch-ee-ow.” But a day after making racist and homophobic comments on uStream, Mayweather offered an apology to those who were offended. Click here to read more.

Bradley, Angulo and Tua

When I make a post on a friday or saturday before a weekend of fights, my goal is to give readers all the information they need to watch as informed fans. Interviews, quotes, record, highlights and articles all help me accomplish this goal. The objective is that an individual who knows next to nothing about boxing or any of the fighters could have a conversation with other fans while watching the fight and maybe even have a few people think or say “hey, that guy/girl knows whats up.”

Alas, my weekend worshipping ways have caught up with me. No time to do extra reasearch or find that perfect highlight video to hype the fights. There are however, a couple things I can mention off the top of my head.

1) Well done, Showtime. The rival network has picked up HBO’s slack and put on some quality events this summer. They are at it again with a Timothy Bradley and Alfredo Angulo doubleheader.

2) If there is one thing I am sure of this weekend, it is that top rated light welterweight Timothy Bradley will preserve his undefeated record and defeat Luis Carlos Abregu. Wait a minute! you may think. Abregu is undefeated in 29 fights with 23 knockouts! Surely he can compete with Bradley! Wrong. Bradley wins a wide UD by pressuring Abregu, picking his spots, using his athleticism and outboxing and out working LCA to a UD. Bet the house.

3) Perro must prove himself tonight. In order to beat top quality contender Joachim Alcine, Alfredo “Perro” Angulo must display class and ability to box, keep composed and stick to his strengths. Alcine is a good boxer with a bit of a difficult style, so it should be a good test for the up and coming Perro.

4) Tuaman fights tonight! Love to see David Tua back in action, keeping it active. I expect he will annihilate Monte Barrett inside of three rounds. Tua, who is on a slow and steady comeback trail, takes another good looking fight against Monte Barrett, who has lost three straight and is a placemat for aggressive, dominant fighters.

5) Bradley via UD, Perro by TKO 10 and Tua via KO 2. Check ya lata peace!

Early Sparks Turn to Fireworks as Lopez Stops Concepcion in 2

WBO Featherweight champion Juan Manuel Lopez rose from the canvas late in round one on his way to a second round TKO over Bernabe Concepcion. Lopez looked sharp early, hurting and staggering Concepcion and then dropping him with a combination (first time in his career Concepcion has been down). Lopez proceeded to batter Concepcion against the ropes, the fight close to being stopped when Concepcion unloaded a massive left hook that brought Lopez down to a knee.

Candidate for round of the year? Yes. Round two began with Lopez flooring Concepcion with a pretty straight left, and post knockdown stayed tight, getting back to his jab and landing the more effective punches until he hurt and dropped Concepcion again late in the round, this time for good.

It was an entertaining, explosive fight where we got to see what Lopez was made of. It is always great to see fighters at lower, less popular weight classes giving fans and viewers a show that has been severely lacking in many recent premiere events.

Lopez’s victory on Saturday sets up a super fight of sorts with Rafael Marquez on September 18th.

JuanMa Fights Tonight

WBO Featherweight Champion Juan Manuel Lopez enters the ring tonight against tough challenger Bernabe Concepcion in Puerto Rico.

JuanMa looks to continue his streak of dominating performances (Rogers Mtagwa not included) as super-fights with Celestino Callerbo, Yuriorkis Gamboa or even Chris John loom in his future.

Look for JuanMa to be leading on the cards and stopping Concepcion in round 8.

Mosley vs. Mora Finalized

I am sure more than a couple of you know about this by now, but Shane Mosley has agreed to fight former contender Sergio Mora on September 18th.

The card, which will be titled “Shot or Not” (joking, obviously) will be held at the Staples Center on Shane’s 10th anniversary of his victory over Oscar De La Hoya.

HBO Stacks Marquez vs Diaz II PPV

I know, I know. PPV’s kinda suck. Is it really worth dropping 55 bones to watch one hyped up fight? Sometimes yes, usually no.

However, in a rare move, HBO has absolutely STACKED their undercard for the July 31st PPV rematch between Juan Manuel Marquez and Juan Diaz.

Top undefeated prospect Daniel Jacobs 20(17)-0 will take on another top prospect Dmitry Pirog 16(13)-0 for the vacant WBO crown (yes, those same assholes who stripped Sergio Martinez for no reason). In addition Robert (The Ghost) Gurrero 26(18)-1-1 will face four time World Champion Joel Casamayor and Jorge Linares will take on Rocky Juarez.

The Drought Continues

Another weekend approaches, and still no satiating topics, fights or news. Julio Cesar Chavez beat John Duddy. Sure, Demetrius Hopkins is fighting Mike Arnaoutis on Friday, but the momentum built in boxing’s spring months has slowly and steadily evaporated.

Hot prospect Juan Maneul Lopez fights next weekend, though Bernabe Conception is a mere distraction from true challenges like Gamboa and Callerbo. There is hope, however. The 17th of July presents a nice looking doubleheader featuring number one light welterweight Timothy Bradley and hard hitting light middleweight Alfredo Angulo. Hell, even big David Tua is back in the mix against Monte Barrett.

Sure, its not great. No superfights. And yea, we may have to wait until JMM vs Diaz II for some real fireworks (Alfredo Angulo excluded), but its a start, right?

Enjoy the time off, and think about starting to save up for the Mayweather vs Pacquiao PPV. I’m thinking they will charge $75 a pop for that one…

Chavez and Duddy Face Off

So John Duddy and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. are fighting. Eh. This WBC Silver Middleweight title (do we really need another bogus belt?) will determine which one of these two overrated, overblown prospects will get some attention until they lose their first fight against legitimate competition.

Do yourself a favor, don’t buy the PPV. Duddy is a brawler trying (for some reason) to become a boxer. JCC jr. is coming off a positive drug test after his las fight (which was a poor showing) and has reportedly looked piss poor in sparring. I wanted to make an insightful post about how fights like this are bad for the sport etc etc, but it’s my birthday weekend and I am going to have fun.

Chavez Jr. wins a close decision.
